For the Hillsborough Recorder

Dialectic Hall, August 25th, 1861

Whereas it has just been our melancholy fate to receive the sad tidings of the decease of our late beloved fellow member, W. P. Mangum, who by all was so highly esteemed for his virtues and respected for his talents; and whereas it has been his glorious destiny to have his name enrolled in the list of the heroes who fell in the recent conflict of Manassas, while noble battling in the cause of Freedom and Justice, therefore

Resolved, That we do deeply deplore the affliction that has fallen on our Society in being so early deprived of a member, who was destined to shed still brighter luster on her name, had not the relentless hand of Death cut short a career so well begun.

Resolved, That we do still more deeply lament the loss that has been sustained by our country in the premature death of one who has proven himself so well worthy to be her defender in this her hour of need.

Resolved, That we endeavor to submit with all due humility to this dispensation of an all-wise Providence, trusting that one, who lived so nobly and died so gallantly, has been but transferred to another sphere, where a far richer reward awaits his many merits.

Resolved, That we tender our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family of the deceased, while pointing them to that source whence alone consolation can come.

Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of the deceased, and also to the Hillsborough Recorder, Raleigh Register and Raleigh Standard, with a request for publication.
